kill devil hill meteorological center and wright brothers historical park

Proposed initially as a homage to wood construction, this center incorporated responses to the often times severe weather of South Carolina as well as the site's historical precedent of the Wright Brother's first flight. Seen as a symbol of flight, the complex's form consists of light, floating masses mounted on heavy concrete terraforming.

In response to the weather, all large glazed areas are faced with rollaway, industrial canvas sheathing. Their consistency allows light to pass through but not heat. Their animated response to wind and rain allows the interior spaces to come alive and fully interact the user with the building.

The center's facilities include a weather research station (labs, observation tower, library, conference rooms, offices) employee residences, and a visitor's center (exhibit areas, theatre, entry lobby)
